Electric Cars – Auto Industry Scourge

Electric Cars – Auto Industry Scourge

With this new push toward more electric vehicles in order to save our planet from the phantom nemisis (Man Made Global Warming), I’ve begun to think more about just what this new trend could mean to the US and the world as a whole.

Clearly, the push in this direction is related to the elimination of vehicle emissions that results when a “gas guzzler” is traded in for one of these new “go green clean machines”. And, anyone with half a brain can see that an electric car will, in fact, produce less emissions than a gas powered car.

However, a person with full and complete access to the true mental capacity of a WHOLE brain can see the many fallacies that exist in this argument.

Petroleum to Synthetic Oil & Back

One very frequently asked question when dealing with the issues of lubrication and filtration issues, is one that goes something like this:

“Mr. motor oil expert: I’ve heard that if I make the switch to synthetic oil in my vehicle, I can never go back. If I try to go back to petroleum oil, my engine will spew up goofy green mucus or will give up the ghost and just simply fall flat on the side of the road somewhere in a heap. What’s the real truth? Am I really playing with fire here or is this just another one of Uncle Manny’s Myths?”

Of course, the “politic” answer is, “You MIGHT ‘jack’ your vehicle by switching back and forth between petroleum and synthetic oil …” However, I think it might be useful to provide you with something just a bit more useful. So, I encourage you to play the video below for a little detail on this issue.

To use Multi-Viscosity Oils Or Not

In recent years, multigrade oils have become much more commonplace in the lubricants industry. Obviously, one significant benefit to using a multi-viscosity motor oil is that it flows much better in cold temperatures, reducing cold start engine wear. So, clearly there is value to using a multigrade oil, IF you live in colder climates.

However, there are many people that still have alot of concern over using multi-viscosity and lighter viscosity motor oils, fearing excessive engine wear and premature engine failure or loss of performance. The question is, are these concerns justified, and is it sometimes a better option to use a straight weight (monograde) motor oil?

Microscale Pumps, Motors & Turbines

Obviously, smaller isn’t always necessarily better, but there are definitely situations where smaller can be a huge benefit. Apparently, a team of researchers at the A. James Clark School of Engineering agree, and are working on a project to help the US military lighten the load of soldiers in combat. Of course, their research could have wide-ranging effects not only within the military, but also in industry.

By creating super tiny ball bearings, they have been able to create microscale silicon pumps, motors and turbines with rotational speeds approaching 90,000 RPM, the ramifications of which could be unbelievable.

Emergency Jump Starter

Recently, my family and I took a trip to Florida for my business. Of course, we also did the Disney thing (how can you go to Florida with young kids and NOT do the Disney thing, right?). We decided to drive down and bring the travel trailer and camp at the Disney Fort Wilderness Campground, rather than fly down and rent a house. Needless to say, that was ALOT of driving, since I did all of it (over 50 hours by the time our 2 week trip was done).
